Born 1946 in Kochi, Japan.

After studying under Takashi Kijima, he became a freelance photographer in 1971.

A trip to the Sahara Desert in 1972 led to extensive coverage of Africa, including the Nile River and Ethiopia.

From the late 1980s, he moved to the Middle East and Asia to cover the lives and beliefs of people living in harsh climates, and he continued to cover the region for a long period of time.

Since the 2000s, he has focused on the Andes and India. 

His many photo books, including Sahara and Nile, have been co-published internationally.

He has held exhibitions of "Pilgrimage to the Holy Land" in Tokyo, Rome, Milan, Taipei, and elsewhere.

He was awarded the Ken Domon Prize and the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize.

In 2009, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
